ABOUT

Dr. Paul Thornton-Bott

BM MRCS FRCS FRACS FAOrthAHip & Knee Joint Replacement Specialist

Dr. Paul Thornton-Bott

Dr. Thornton-Bott is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialty interest in Hip and Knee Joint Replacement surgery and Trauma Surgery.

He performs arthroscopic surgery and replacement surgery of the Knee, joint replacement surgery of the hip and has a particular interest and significant experience in Revision Joint Replacement of both hip and knee. He also performs certain foot and ankle surgeries and simple hand surgery, such as Carpal Tunnel Decompression. He has many years of experience in the management and trauma surgery of upper and lower limbs.

Orthopaedic Surgery has provided me with a remarkably privileged career. I have nearly 20 years of orthopaedic experience and never tire from the joy I get from being able to make such a difference to peoples’ lives, whether it be managing a simple fracture or giving them a new joint.

I use proven techniques to optimise patient outcomes including minimally invasive surgery, computer navigation, targeted pain control, early mobilisation and rapid recovery. This ensures my patients get the very best result from these life-changing operations, allowing them to get back to a pain free and active quality of life.

I have trained and practiced in some of the best orthopaedic hospitals in the world including The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and John Radcliffe Trauma Unit in Oxford, UK and The Mater Hospital in Sydney, where I have completed two lower limb joint replacement Fellowships. I have trained in all areas of orthopaedic and trauma surgery but I have extensive Fellowship training and experience in Hip and Knee surgery with an emphasis on primary and revision joint replacement surgery.

I have provided a public service to Shoalhaven Hospital in Nowra since 2015, both in emergency trauma and general orthopaedic surgery and can see both private and public patients in rooms in Nowra, Milton, Shellharbour and Sydney.

Teaching and Research

I am actively involved in Medical Student, Junior doctor and Orthopaedic Registrar Training both in the Shoalhaven and in Sydney and I contribute to GP, ED and Nursing teaching locally as well.

I have a special interest in the Direct Anterior Approach to the hip and have been involved in the teaching of this technique as DAA Faculty with Cadaver training and travel both Nationally and Internationally to provide one-on-one proctoring to other surgeons wishing to learn this approach.

As a Specialist in the UK I was regularly involved in teaching and training of junior doctors and Medical Students.

Research is a very important aspect of Orthopaedic Surgery and I have been actively involved in research throughout my career. I have co-authored a substantial portfolio of clinical research and have presented many of these papers at meetings and conferences all over the world. I continue to attend such meetings to ensure my practice is kept up dated with the most current evidence based concepts and methods.
